Recently, Nintendo of America has made some pretty stupid decisions in terms of annoying their fanbase. Monetising people’s Youtube Let’s Plays (then changing their mind shortly afterwards), trying to get Super Smash Bros Melee removed from the EVO tournament (then also changing their mind after the outcry) and quite a few other things besides. But now, they’ve apparently threatened Newgrounds with some copyright infringement notice over Nintendo resources in flash games too! Here’s a mention of it on the Newgrounds forum:
Nintendo sent a DMCA and the admins had to unpublish over 500 flash games that featured assets and characters from Nintendo to evade any legal consequences. To me it seems like Nintendo is lately on a roll when it comes do making their fans upset, they also went against Let’s Plays for a bit.
This also apparently extends to popular ones like the fan game ‘Super Mario 63′, which now simply says its been ‘removed by the moderation team’.
So yes, Nintendo basically threatened Newgrounds with legal action over a bunch of fan games. It really does make me wonder who the hell is making their legal decisions in recent years given how many times they’re annoying their fanbase with stupid, trivial complaints like this, and it’s also making me think that someone needs to just stand out to this copyright/trademark obsession and just limit it significantly.
Are you also annoyed that Nintendo has forced Newgrounds to remove hundreds of flash games featuring things from Nintendo franchises? And is anyone else also a bit worried that a few certain other Mario fan game sites could be next or something?
