New Pokemon X and Y Rumours?

February 2nd, 2013 by Nin3DS2 comments so far

This time they’re from Pokejungle, a site which itself says the rumours seem implausible for various reasons.  But they’re still fairly interesting, so here are the rumours about Pokemon X and Y:

More than 100 new Pokémon.
There are indeed new evolutions and pre-evolutions, most of them focused on Gen V Pokémon. However, a few older Pokémon, including Gen I classics, are getting surprising new developments.

No new types, but there are “Cross-bred” Pokémon introduced. Certain father/mother breeding pairs will result in a visually distinct child, who will be the mother’s species, but will, for example, have a pattern reminiscent of its father or a slightly altered color scheme. This is basically the new Gender Difference and is simply an aesthetic bonus, nothing extreme and only certain pairings result in this…the Pokemon is still considered the species of its mother, it’s not a new species. One example I can give is that it is possible to get certain Pokemon sporting Pikachu’s red cheeks.

The Starters become Grass/Steel, Fire/Psychic, and Water/Electric. They’re inspired by various European-centric archetypes…Chespin becomes a knight with chestnut armor, Fennekin a wizard with a majestic fur cloak, and Froakie a Nordic Viking with a thunder-cloud mullet/beard combo.

Xerneas is Ice/Steel, and Yveltal is Fire/Dark. They have a unique ability where they can shift types with each other, Xerneas becoming red and Fire/Steel, and Yveltal becoming blue and Ice/Dark. Supposedly, Game Freak chose the typings in part due to members of the team being fans of R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, among other reasons.

Let’s now break this down bit by bit and see whether these are plausible or not.  First of all, the ’100 new Pokemon’ thing:

More than 100 new Pokémon.
There are indeed new evolutions and pre-evolutions, most of them focused on Gen V Pokémon. However, a few older Pokémon, including Gen I classics, are getting surprising new developments.

This seems plausible enough.  Pokemon Gold and Silver added 100 new Pokemon, and that’s only seem as the bare minimum added in a single generation.  So the chances of there being more than 100 new ones is extremely likely.

New evolutions and pre-evolutions are logical too, especially when you consider that this is an even numbered generation.  What do I mean here?  Let me explain:

Gens 1,3 and 5 are odd numbered, and most introduce Pokemon from brand new evolutionary lines.  These are meant to be an ‘introduction’ to the series for new players.

Gens 2,4 and likely 6 however are even numbered, and mostly add new evolutions and forms of existing Pokemon.  These are meant to expand on what the odd numbered generations start.

With this pattern said, it seems likely that Gen 6 will add new evolutions to older Pokemon. It also seems likely most will be focused on Gen 5 species.

But that’s where the rumour starts getting less plausible…

No new types, but there are “Cross-bred” Pokémon introduced. Certain father/mother breeding pairs will result in a visually distinct child, who will be the mother’s species, but will, for example, have a pattern reminiscent of its father or a slightly altered color scheme. This seems interesting, although it would require a lot more work when it came to 3D models like the ones used in Generation 6.  So while it’d fit nicely with the whole ‘DNA’ theme, I’m not sure it’d be something Game Freak would consider worth the effort for a purely aesthetic game mechanic (aka with no gameplay effects).

I’m going to skip the starter discussion, since it seems plausible enough as is and seems like something you can’t ‘judge’ as accurate or not.  But the next bit is where the rumour falls apart more than a tad:

Xerneas is Ice/Steel, and Yveltal is Fire/Dark. They have a unique ability where they can shift types with each other, Xerneas becoming red and Fire/Steel, and Yveltal becoming blue and Ice/Dark. Supposedly, Game Freak chose the typings in part due to members of the team being fans of R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, among other reasons.

It’s interesting, but the bolded makes me disbelief it.  After all, how would anyone know what Game Freak like despite being an outsider?  And I really don’t believe Game Freak are going to base their designs on anything related to current literature, seems like a nice clear way to get sued.

But the type shifting thing would be interesting I have to admit.

There’s also a bunch of rumoured Pokemon, but I’ll leave the descriptions of those over at Pokejungle’s own website.  They’re not too implausible in concept, although none of them really strike me as particularly likely either.

But yeah, that’s the interesting new Pokemon X and Y rumour that seems to be making the rounds.  Is it likely?  The reference to hobbies and the mixing characterisics of Pokemon makes me incredibly skeptical.  But there could well be a grain of truth in the Pokemon descriptions, types and abilities, none of those seem too ridiculously over the top in the same way as the rest of the rumour.

What do you think of this?

It all sounded plausible enough for a rumor, until it stated the legendary’s types, I highly doubt the Yveltal will not be a flying type, and in this rumor, Yveltal has a MASSIVE advantage over Xerneas so, no thanks. The type switching thing sounds cool, but it would involve having to get both games so you can get the legendary’s together.

I think their finally thinking outside the box. But I’m still waiting for a game where they don’t magically find a new region with 150+ new Pokemon. I want a massive MMORPG were a character chooses his/her own region, his/her own town, obviously the “pick your starter” will still stand, but, unlike all the other games, I want it to have ALL of the regions on which you can go via airplane or ships.

Even if those variables will never be real I’m a sucker for Pokemon, so I can’t wait for this new installment! And now even more that they stop using colors!
